Expertise Across a Broader Set of Possibilities.
Explore insurance and annuity categories that may help address protection, planning, and institutional distribution needs.
Section A · Life Insurance
The Role of Life Insurance in Financial Planning.
Life insurance provides a death benefit to named beneficiaries and, depending on the policy type, may also accumulate cash value. In a broader financial plan it is often used to protect dependents, create liquidity, support business arrangements or contribute to legacy objectives.
- Term life insurance
- Coverage for a defined period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years. Often considered for temporary needs like income replacement during working years.
- Permanent life insurance
- Designed to provide lifetime coverage when premiums and policy requirements are met. Includes whole life and universal life designs with differing flexibility and guarantees.
- Cash-value life insurance
- Permanent policies that may accumulate cash value over time. Policy loans and withdrawals reduce values and death benefits and may have tax consequences.
- Survivorship life insurance
- Insures two lives, typically paying after the second death. Frequently discussed in estate liquidity conversations.
- Business applications
- Coverage used in connection with buy-sell agreements, key person protection or executive benefit arrangements.
- Advanced planning concepts
- Trust ownership, wealth transfer structures and other sophisticated concepts that require independent legal and tax advice.
Product suitability depends on objectives, costs, policy terms, underwriting and individual circumstances. Guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer.
Section B · Annuities
Understanding Annuity Contracts.
Annuities are insurance contracts with features that vary significantly by product and issuing insurer. They may be considered for objectives such as accumulation or creating a stream of income, and they carry costs, limitations and surrender provisions that should be fully understood.
- Fixed annuities
- Generally credit a declared interest rate for a stated period, set by the insurer. Surrender charges typically apply to early withdrawals.
- Fixed indexed annuities
- Credit interest based partly on an external index, subject to caps, participation rates or spreads. Not a direct market investment.
- Variable annuities
- Values fluctuate with underlying subaccounts and can lose value, including principal. Subject to securities regulation and additional fees.
- Immediate annuities
- Generally begin income payments soon after purchase in exchange for a lump sum, often reducing liquidity.
- Deferred annuities
- Accumulate over a period before income may begin, with various withdrawal and payout options.
